Legend says the Kathmandu Valley was once a lake. The bodhisattva Manjushri cut the Chobhar gorge with his sword, the water drained away, and the valley became fertile land. Geologists agree the valley was once a lake.
Kirtipur’s people held out against King Prithvi Narayan Shah for a long time before Nepal was unified in the 18th century.
