- MorningWatch for the saait, the auspicious moment for tika, which is announced a few days in advance.
- MiddayIf a family invites you, go. If not, the President gives tika to the public at Sheetal Niwas. Expect a long queue.
- EveningMost restaurants are closed. Eat at your hotel or somewhere in Thamel.
Culture & customs
This is the most important day of the year for most Nepali families. Elders put a paste of rice, yogurt and red vermilion on the forehead of younger relatives, tuck jamara behind the ear and give dakshina with a blessing for a long life and success. Families visit one elder after another, sometimes for days.
Not everyone takes part in the same way. Some Kirat and other Janajati families use white tika or don’t celebrate Dashain at all.
