The plan

  1. MorningWalk clockwise around Boudhanath stupa with the Tibetan community.
  2. AfternoonHave butter tea and a Tibetan lunch on a rooftop overlooking the stupa.
  3. EveningWatch a monastery's evening puja (prayer ceremony), if one is open to visitors.

Culture & customs

Boudha is one of the biggest stupas in the world and the centre of Tibetan Buddhist life in Nepal. Most of the city is still on holiday, so it’s a calm place to spend the day.

Across Kathmandu, families are playing cards (taas). During Dashain and Tihar, gambling in the home is widely tolerated, and a game of “marriage” can go on all night.
